The HUUSD Board is seeking two volunteers to fill vacancies from Duxbury and Waterbury on the school board. Meetings resume in late August and will go through Town Meeting Day 2022. If you are interested or willing to consider this possibility, please email the Board chair, Torrey Smith, at [email protected] for further information.
The Board met in-person in the Harwood Library on Wednesday, June 23rd.
At the meeting, the Board approved “Brookside Primary School” as the new name for TBPS. The vote came after discussion about the process used for the renaming, during which the Board expressed interest in developing opportunities for ongoing learning in the community regarding the name change. The Board will continue to reflect on the process and how to develop community engagement that includes as many stakeholder groups as possible.
The Board also discussed the state legislature’s recent decision to require testing for PCBs in our schools. While not required immediately, the Board voted to authorize testing at Harwood in order to be able to incorporate findings into the bond planning that is currently underway.
A temporary committee of the Board will work this summer to develop a community engagement plan around the November bond. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, June 29th at noon and will be in the Harwood library and online. Please see the huusd.org website for more details if you are interested in attending.
The Board approved its fall schedule. The first regular meeting of the new school year will be on Tuesday, August 24th at 6PM -- instead of our usual Wednesday. At that meeting, the Board will hear specifics about work and costs of the bond proposal and begin to narrow its focus towards a final project.
In other matters:
The lifting of the Governor’s COVID emergency orders means that all public meetings must be in-person. The Board is eager to develop a hybrid approach that will also allow for remote participation. In the coming weeks, we will begin offering these hybrid meetings and hope to work out any kinks with technology so that we are able to offer the community easily accessible methods for both in-person and remote participation at future meetings.
